NEW APPLICANT PROCESS FOR FIREARMS IDENTIFICATION CARD AND HANDGUN PURCHASER PERMITS
The NJ Firearms application process is now on an automated system called F.A.R.S. ( Firearms Application & Registration System) The system, which is web based MUST be completed from an internet device that has the ability to print the completed application and associated documents.
In order to start the process, click on the following link to begin: www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars.
The online application is user driven so please ensure that you have entered the accurate information that is required. This includes a phone number you can be reached at and an email address for your references. Any inaccurate information will lead to a delay in your application process.
Please advise your references to complete the questionnaire as soon as possible. All applicants will receive email updates throughout the process. Once your application is approved, you will be contacted via email to pick up your paperwork. The North Caldwell Police Department WILL NO LONGER accept paper applications under any circumstances. Please do not contact the North Caldwell Police Department for a status check of your application, as updates will be sent to you via email. A ORI # is needed to complete the application. Please ensure you have the correct ORI number entered. The North Caldwell Police Departments ORI # is NJ0071500. If you enter the wrong number your application will not be properly received.
The fee schedule is as follows:
Initial NJ Firearm ID Card - $5.00
NJ Permit to Purchase a handgun is $2.00 for each permit
Replacement ID card or change of address is – no charge
North Caldwell Police will accept payment via exact cash (no change available) or check made out to North Caldwell Police Department.
After submitting payment please use the below link to schedule an appointment to meet with a Firearms Officer. Only FID Cards are required to be picked up. All permits to purchase are electronic and are not provided by the police department.
