Dog/Cat Licensing

Pet Licenses:
Pet licenses are due every year in the month of January and may be obtained at the North Caldwell Borough Hall. Any dog over the age of six months should be licensed. The only requirement is that the animal have a valid rabies vaccine, as defined by the State of NJ.

Summonses:
Summonses will be issued for unlicensed pets. Pet licenses are due every year in the month of January and may be obtained at the North Caldwell Borough Hall. Any dog or cat over the age of six (6) months should be licensed. The only requirement is that the animal have a valid rabies vaccine, as defined by the State of New Jersey.

New Application:
The application can be mailed to the Municipal Clerk’s Office or placed in the drop box at the front door of Borough Hall.  The license will be mailed to your home address.

Fees:
Dog/Cat Licenses are required for all animals in the Borough of North Caldwell. Licenses are valid from January 1st—December 31st. The deadline for licensing before a late fee is imposed January 31st  on renewals after which a $10.00 late fee will be added.

Dogs and Cats:
   - $20.00 Spayed/Neutered
   - $23.00 Un-spayed/Un-neutered
   - *Add $10.00 late fee if you renew license after January 31st

Requirements:
 
 - Proof of Spay/Neuter must be supplied at time of registering (one time only), it will be your pet’s permanent record.
   - A copy of current rabies certificate.  Contact the Borough Clerk for a State rabies exemption form at 973-228-6410, x-100.
   - Owner information such as: Name, Address, Telephone Number, Name of animal, age of animal, type of hair (i.e. short/medium/long).

Renewals:
When renewing your animal license, it is required that the current rabies vaccine for ten (10) months of the licensing period. Vaccine must be good through October 31 of the current year.

Dog Notice:
Dogs are not allowed to run at large. Owners whose dogs run loose are subject to receiving a summons and possible fine.

Laws:
N.J.A.C. 8:23A 4.1 “No Municipal Clerk or other Official designated to license dogs shall grant any such license and official metal registration tag for any dog unless the dog owner provides evidence that the dog to be licensed and registered has been inoculated against rabies with a vaccine having duration of immunity which extends throughout at least ten of the 12 months of the licensing period. Dogs with a duration of immunity against rabies that expires prior to the tenth month of the licensing period shall be revaccinated prior to issuance of a license.

N.J.A.C. 8:23A 4.3 “Municipal dog licensing officials shall grant an exemption to the rabies inoculation requirement for any dog that a duly licensed veterinarian certifies in writing to be incapable of being inoculated because of an infirmity, other physical condition, or regimen of therapy.”
